MANAWATU RACES

DAY OF SURPRISES THAW DEFEATS GASCONY COMMENDATION WINS FINE GOLD CUP CONTEST In fine weather, but with a rather sparse attendance, the autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club was opened at Awapuni yesterday. In view of the prevailing conditions and the splendid programme to be submitted the moderate assembly of the racegoing public was surprising, and even the most pessimistic of the club’s officials . could not have been prepared for a deficit of £12,676 on the totalisator’s operations for the day. Last year the turnover was £33,929, and yesterday £20,253. The course was dead as a result of much rain, and along the back stretch the going was on the soft side. Commendation won the Awapuni Gold Cup after a thrilling struggle, and Thaw sprang a surprise—one of many during the afternoon—by heading off G'iscony in the Sires Produce Stakes. Notes on the racing and details of concluding results follow: WAICULLUS GETS A STAKE The opening event, the Woodhey Hack, saw the triumph of a good favourite in Town Bird, who drew the rails, and although the Waikato representative did not begin best he was soon in a handy position. Thomond began smartly from Vast Acre, Waicullus, Berinthia, Town Birl and Abbey Queen, with Orazone near the rear. As they came across the top WaicuUus and Vast Acre were together, and they turned for home just in front of Berinthia, Town Bird and a bunch. In the run up the straight the favourite got up to beat WaicuUus by a neck, and Manly was a couple of lengths further back. Orazone was fourth, and Vast Acre, Royal Flight and Mon Mint were next to cross the line. An inquiry was held, and as a result Town Bird was placed second, first prize being awarded Waicullus. Town Bird bored over on to Waicullus over the last bit. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN The bracket Brigadier Bill and Omahu came in for most support in the Karere Hurdles, with Vexatious counting a good number of supporters. Past the stands the first time Brigadier Bill was in the van from Bonny Rill, Rangi Sarto, Hallowmorn. Santonio, Ardath, Vexatious and Re'hutai. Entering the back stretch Brigadier Bill pulled his way to the front, and was the first to turn for home, being closely followed' by San Pedro, Ardath, Hallowmorn and Vexatious. A furlong from home San Pedro challenged Brigadier Bill, and got up to beat him by a length and a-half. Ardath showed a glimpse of form in finishing third a couple of lengths away, the next to finish being Hallowmorn, Kalakaua, Vexatious, Sottano and Matu. The winner *paid a fine dividend. BLACK MINT SURPRISES In a field of 21 for the principal handicap event, the Prince of Wales Handicap, Mandane was made favourit3, being entrusted with £485, as against True Blood £304 and Civility £289. The latter drew the extreme outside, and with Scotch Mixture, Royal Damon and Yoma got away badly. The order out of the straight was Star Area, First Acre, Rouex, Peneus, Buoyant and Clarinda, the l ist pair being Civility and Scotch Mixture. Along the back Peneus had gone to the front, with Rouex next, and First Acre, True Blod, Vivo, Star Area, Buoyant, Clarinda and Novar following in close order, Mandane being well to the rear and Civility commencing to thread a way through the field. At the half-mile True Blood pushed his nose in front, and he had the’ advantage into the straight ever Rouex, Peneus, Civility, Vivo, Novar and Captain Gazeley. As soon as they had straightened up Civility was in the van, and a little further on she was three lengths in the lead. Here Black Mint and Yoma came fast on the outside, and in a rare finish the outsider got up to defeat Civility by a neck. Yoma, who weakened over the last bit, was a length and a-half away third, and the next to cross the line were Vertigern, Novar, Kilceit, True Blood, Vivo, Peneus and Buoyant. There were only 88 tickets on the winner, and the dividend was a substantial one. A GOOD ONE In a good betting race in the Te Matai Handicap, Cohesion was favourite, a little better backed than Catcall. Lin Arlington, Gordon Swift, Gardant, Mandarine. Addlepate, was the order out of the straight, Capitulation being last, and at the five furlongs Addlepate took up the running from Lin Arlington, Mandarine, Gardant and Cohesion. The favourite moved up crossing the top and was first into the home stretch, where he was followed by Addlepate, Lin Arlington, Gordon Swift, Koauau, Gardant and Capitulation. The favourite then drew out to score comfortably by two lengths, with the outsider, Koauau, finishing half a length in front of Capitulation. Catcall was fourth, and Inoe, Gardant, Lin Arlington, Gordon Swift and Kilmiss next. THAW DOWNS GASCONY With four horses representing two brackets the only starters in the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, the market was crippled, and £673 went through the machine, most of which was on the Lowry bracket. A good start saw Gascony the pacemaker along the back from Great Charter and Damaris, and at the home turn Gascony had a slight advantage over Great Charter, with Damaris and Thaw, the latter corning from the rear. A furlong from home Gascony held an advantage of tr-.ree lengths, when Thaw set out after him, and finishing very strongly got up to beat Gascony by a head. Damaris was three lengths away, a neck in front of Great Charter. A FINE FINISH The runners in the Gold Cup were Rapine, Royal Divorce, Piuthair and Commendation, and the three-year-old was always the favourite, winding up with £1,079, which was three times the amount invested on the second choice, Rapine. A good start eventuated, and Royal Divorce had a head advantage as they passed the pose the first time, Commendation being a length in front of Rapine and Piuthair. Along the back Royal Divorce was clear of the favourite, but three furlongs from home Commendation went up and turned into the straight the best part of two lengths ahead of Rapine and Piuthair, Royal Divorce another length away. At the half furlong Rapine and Piuthair made their efforts, and the whip was drawn on the favourite, who hung on and won by a length from Rapine, who was only a head in advance of Piuthair. P.oyal Divorce finished seven lengths further back. SMART PERFORMANCE Lady Cavendish was at a short price in the Telegraph Handicap, and Penzora, Royal Damon, Archeen and Crown Area being evenly backed. At the start Crown Area was chopped

out. Licinius began best from Lady Cavendish, Tukia, Benzora, Gailiard, Mireusonta and Royal Damon. At the half-mile Licinius and Lady Cavendish were together in the van, Tukia, Mireusonta and Plain Sailing being their nearest attendants. Benzora was the first to turn for home from Licinius, Plain Sailing, Tukia and Crown Area, and in the run to the post Crown Area came fast and got up to win by half a length from Licinius, who was a head in front of Benzora. Gaillard was fourth, and in a heap were Tukia, Mireusonta, Miss Hupana, Good Sport and Bevis. LAST TO FAVOURITE Hathor was the best backed in a 16-horse field for the concluding event, the Linton Handicap. Kalos began best from Popoff, Partaga, Hathor. Henna, Break o’ Day, Superb King and Hymestrason. At the five furlongs the favourite went to the front and piloted the field into the straight, those following being Kalos, Partaga, Henna, Superb King, Popoff, Break o’ Day, Hymestrason and The Swell, and going on won by a length from Partaga, who was a similar distance in front of Popoff. Kalos, Merle, Break o’ Day, Colarina, Mister Gamp and Henna were next to pass the post. Additional results: TE MATAI HANDICAP, 1 mile and a distance.—l Cohesion, 8.6 (C. W. AT TE RAPA TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME REVIEW OF THE CARD The Waikato Racing Club’s fine big course at Te Rapa, near Frankton Junction, will to-morrow be the scene of the opening of the autumn meeting. Some rain has fallen down the line, and the probabilities are that the going will be soft. Very large fields will come out for the various events, and this will ensure keen racing, even if it does make the. lot of the backer even more difficult. A start is to be made at 11.45 a.m. with the FRANKTON HURDLE RACE of 200sovs.; 15 miles

, This event bears an open appearance, with several of the acceptors having shown form recently. The three at the top rather command the situation, and in an interesting contest the public may be found going for PETER ROSA, ARCHIBALD and LADY SPALPEEN. The second race on the card has thirty-six acceptors, as follows: TRIAL HANDICAP Of lOOsovs.; 6 furlongs st. Jb. st. lb.

To start at 12.25 p.m. There will be no division, for it is expected that a few course scratchings will obviate the necessity for this step. In such a crowd luck is certain to play a big part, but strictly on performances there are a few that must be favoured. CATAPULT, WHAKA KING, and ATAPAI are three of them, and with some luck will go prominently. The smallest field of the day will line up for the JUVENILE HANDICAP Of 150sovs.; 6 furlongs st. ib. st. lb.

To start at 1.10 p.m. There is really nothing in the race that has any form as a recommendation, and therefore it will be about the most difficult affair of the day. The soft track suit the top weight, but will hinder Speechless. Probably AURICULUS and STANDFAST may prove worthy of support. The principal handicap race on the programme follows. This is the STOREY MEMORIAL CUP Of 700sovs.; 1£ miles

To start at 1.50 p.m. If the going is not too bad the horse at the head of the list should give a good account of himself on his recent Ellerslie running. Further down are Hipo and Lord Star, both of whom went good races at the Avondale fixture. Master Doon and Barometer are in good form, and True Blood ran quite a good race at Awapuni yesterday. Mint Leaf is on the improve, and of the others Gold Jacket, Quincoma, and Ballachulish have shown promise in their recent outings. Perhaps PEG AWAY, LORD STAR and the HIPO-MINT LEAF bracket will come in for most support. Twenty-two remain in the BEERESCOURT HACK HANDICAP Of ISOsovs.; 1 mile st. Ib. st. lb.

at Ellerslie recently Paddon went well, but it was obvious that the outing would improve him. Tinokoa likes it soft, and the track will be to his fancy to-morrow. King Arch, Bright Dawn. War Officer, and Kahepoto are useful sorts, and of those on the other side of the list Adjuster reads the best. When the bell stops ringing it will probabiy, be found that the public have pinned their faith to TINOKOA, PADDON and BRIGHT DAWN. Only a small field is left in the LINLEY STEEPLECHASE Of 25050v5.; about 25 miles

To start at 3.15 p.m. The six acceptors should provide a good contest, and no doubt Beau Cavalier on Avondale form will be favourite. Kendal will be improved by his recent outings, and he too may take a hand in the end. Sea De’il is making a reappearance, and Kawa is making a debut over country, and such a bold jumper should do well at this branch of the game. Pendennis should go well if seasoned, being unplaced in a similar event at Ohinemuri, and Hazelburn will need to improve considerably. To sum up, Beau Cavalier and Kendal should be heavily supported. There is another plenteous field engaged in the open sprint, the PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of 400sovs.; 6 furlongs

To start at 3.55 p.m. A field of twenty-two will be found rather unwieldy, but backers will by this time be getting used to the strain. It is a real good field, however, and it should be a great race. A strong hand is held by the Te Awamutu owner-trainer G. Paul with Aussie and Awarere, and they should play their part. Some other likely ones are Oration, King Merv, York Abbey, Merry Jest, Kingfield, Flying Juliet, Bright Knight, Ring the Bell, Nancy Lee, Ned Kelly and Archeno. On his Avondale form backers will probably look to Kingfield, with the Aussie-Awarere bracket and King Merv also counting plenty of friends. The first day concludes with the PUKETAHA HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP Of 200sovs.; 1 mile

To start at 4.35 p.m. With only a stone difference between the top and bottom weights the range is very small, and form may be said to point to Bright Knight (if reserved for this event), Quincoma and Gold Fern. NOTES FROM HEADQUARTERS Among the horses who reached Frankton yesterday afternoon and have engagements at the Waikato meeting were the Taranaki candidates, Hipo, Merry Jest, Oration and Mint Leaf. Transformer, Master Doon, Storm Fiend, King Smock, Matinee, Karnehameha and the steeplechaser Beau Cavalier have also reached the scene. The Te Aroha trainer, H. Eva, brought Flying Juliet, Lorna Doone and Whaka King from Ellerslie after competing at the Avondale meeting. The two-year-old Kerry Dance went through yesterday afternoon to join the team. Ned Kelly, who came into prominence twelve months ago by annexing a hack race each day at the autumn meeting of the Waikato Club, has not fulfilled his early promise by his showings in the interval, though he has gone some good races. Ht may shape better at his training quarters on Saturday. Pendennis has been reserved for the cross-country event on Saturday. He has been in work some time and was stretching out well when galloped this morning. He is a good jumper, and as he possesses pace, should give a good account of himself. Lorna Doone will probably be a starter on the second day at Te Rapa. Her failure at Ellerslie can be attributed to the heavy going. Bright Day was on the track terday morning. He is not engaged to-morrow, but will be raced on the second day of the fixture.
