OPERATIC SOCIETY
A STRONG POSITION GOOD PROFITS DISCLOSED Is there any amateur operatic society in New Zealand or Australia with the record of the Auckland society? Last year it produced “The Arcadians'* and made a profit of £lO5 4s Bd, it has assets which would realise nearly £3,Q00, and it has already given £SM to the cause of charity. At the annual meeting of the society last evening, Mr. W. W. Bruoe presided over a large attendance ami during the evening several speaker* commented on the fine state of tht society. The balance-sheet was one subject for congratulation. It disclosed a total profit of £294 4s 4d on the year'* working, and the liability on the society's hall had been reduc 'd by £350. The annual report stated that “Tte Arcadians” had been played for a season of eight nights and had been a great success both from financial and artistic points of view. The executive had concerned itself very much about the choice of a play for this year, and had decided on "La Mascotte,” an opera comique in three acts. It was an old favourite and was of a type not previously played by the society. It had been impossible to arrange for a longer season of "The Arcadians,” otherwise it could have enjoyed a longer run. The society’s hall was in great demand by kindred societies. The report stated that it was not usual to single out any one performer forparticular praise, but reference should made of the work done by Mr. N Pherson in playing the part of "Pete! Doody” so splendidly. Mr. Brucj moved and Mr. A. V. Hunt second* the adoption of the report and balance sheet. * Mr. Leary, in congratulating society on its attainments, said th«* its balance-sheets had gone fro® strength to strength since the The profit disclosed put the focies in a stronger position than it on paper.
