BANKRUPT FARMER

FAILURE OF CROPS A meeting of creditors In the bankrupt estate of John Thomas, fsrmev, of Paerata, was held this morning before the official assignee, Mr. G. X. Morris. The schedule showed liabilities amounting to £BSB. There were no assets. He settled on a farm at Raetihi, but had to leave the district on account of the illness of his wife. He exchanged hi.; holding for a block of 34 acres at Paerata for which he paid £IOO an acre. He mortgaged this property for £2,750. Bankrupt attributed his failure to the bad state of the farm when he took it over, and to the low prices obtained for his potato crop. He had been ill for nine months, during which time he had to# engage labour. He walked off the farm in January of this year. A bill of sale had been made on the crop with bankrupt’s full understanding, but other business was transacted by Thomas's solicitor and the mortgagees. The meeting was adjourned.
