PRICE MUST BE PAID FOR OUTRAGES IN NANKING

BRITAIN’S DETERMINATION The British Government is determined to exact reparation from Lhina, and if necessary is prepared to take action without American co-operation. It is probable that th e Powers other than America will send a strong note to Mr. Eugene Chen, Nationalist Foreign Minister.

By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 11.15 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. An Admiralty communique states that the gunboat Cockchafer was again under fire at Hsaikwan and returned the fire with machine-guns. The American minesweeper Penguin was also under rifle and field gun fire at Kiangyin, and had four men wounded. Official circles report that the Sixth Cantonese Army has posted notices in Kiukiang attacking the Nanking Government and demanding the execution of Chiang Kai-shek, whose first armi' is now advancing toward Kiukiang. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent states that the British Government is thoroughly but regretfully resigned to the prospect of having to exact reparation for the Nanking outrages without American cooperation.

Probably a stronger Note signed by three or four Powers will be sent to Mr. Chen. This will be more effective than a document of the emasculated order sent to secure mere academic endorsement by Washington.—-A. and N.Z. MANCHURIAN OFFENSIVE SOVIET CONCENTRATION By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Copenhagen special correspondent says that reports from Moscow repeat the story that great concentrations of Soviet troops are being made on the Manchurian border, some quarters assert for the purpose of an offensive in Northern Manchuria.—-A. and N.Z.
