A FORTNIGHT IN MOUNTAINS
RETURN TIRED BUT FIT HELD UP BY WEATHER (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Roy Diedrich, aged 20, and Desmond Scanlon, 18. who left Wellington a fortnight ago to-night for Levin to cross the Tararua Range to Masterton. and for whom search parties have been out for the past week, turned up at Levin at 2.30 yesterday. They returned to Wellington at 7.15. Beyond looking a little wan and tired they appeared % to be remarkably well. The weather, they said, was bad till Tuesday this week, when it cleared considerably. They knew their bearings throughout, but were afraid to move in case they should get lost. Rationing was commenced on Easter Monday, the conservation of food carlying them over to Anzac Day. Although on the last two days they ate only an onion, they had 10’ raw potatoes with them, but their matches were wet and they could light no Are. They became anxious after Anzac ©ay.
Neither felt any ill-effects from the fortnight in the open. They were wet through from Easter Sunday until they obtained a change to-day. Sometimes they could not see a yard in front betause of the sleet.
