RACING
SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW , SOME BIU FIELDS (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday next. The list includes representatives from as far afield as Invercargill, while Wingatui stables are also well represented and the Riccarton stables have a strong contingent engaged also. TE KAPO HURDLES The racing will commence with the Te Kapo Hurdle race, ! in which eight horses are engaged. The I result will probably be confined to the I four top weights of which Oriflamb, ! Kaikahu and Coastguard should be the most prominent. GLADSTONE HANDICAP The South Canterbury trained Shandre. is assured of solid support in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, and if he is at his best he should add to his successes. Brightling and Happy Queen stand out above the remainder. THE CHIEF EVENT Set Sail promises to start favourite for the Timaru Cup, and if she produces the form she displayed at Riccarton a couple of weeks ago, she is not likely to have any serious rivals for the big end of the stake. Rapier figures in the list—but he can be written down as an unlikely starter. Even if he does contest the event he looks to be held safe by Set Sail. On recent form Baldowa and Fresco do n>t appeal, but Bilbo, who annexed tvo of the principal events at the recent Riverton Racing Club’s meeting, is. entitled to respect. He is sheltered in the same stable as Set Sail, and tliere is every possibilty of them dividing the honours. Mountain Lion has no recent form to recommend him, and is not likely to be among the fancied candidates. Assurance, Ophir and Gay Queen are capable of running a good race under the light scale of weights, but of the trio, Ophir’s prospects look the best. Thomolon would have to improve on anything he has shown to have any chance of success. Set Sail, Bilbo and Ophir read best. THE ELECTRIC STAKES A big field is likely to contest the Electric Stakes. Solgele must take a power of beating. He is a particularly smart youngster over a short course, and being a quick beginner he will be well placed early in the race. Gay Sonnette and Royal Tractor should also have a pull over their rivals over a five furlong journey. A SELECT FIELD Quite a select field of sprinters have been paid up for in the Smithfield Handicap. Booster heads the list with 9.13, and despite his weight he will make his presence felt when the pressure is applied. Receipt, Rob and Eaton Bells are others that are likely to have a say in the finish. SMALL FIELD The poorest field of the day is in the Otipua Steeplechase, fcr which only five horses have survived the final payment. Frisco Mail appears as well as any. and next to him Nightraid and Palencia should go best. AN EVEN LOT It Is difficult to find a favourite for the Rosewill Handicap. On recent performances Lucy Locket, Moratorium and Waterlow cannot be overlooked, joj ■jqSnauiti uj aq hjai opods pu-e a good part of the journey, but seven furlongs may be just a trifle too far for her at present. Luthy also reads well among the light-weight division. DONCASTER HANDICAP Backers will probably depend on Thorndale, The Harp and Courtley Rose to divide the honours in the Doncaster Handicap.
