Y.W.C.A.
“AT HOME” An “At Home” for board and committee members, arranged by the Membership Committee of the Y.W.C.A., was held yesterday afternoon in the assembly hall of the association, when about 60 women interested in the association were present. The purpose of the gathering was to recruit new members for the various committees, and to educate both present and prospective members as to the duties of committees and the policy of the association and the scope of its work, embracing the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual training of girls. Mrs. W. M. McCormick, chairman of the Membership Committee, welcomed the guests, and introduced the speakers. Mrs. C. W. Garrard, president, spoke on the work undertaken by the different departments and the duties of the following committees connected with the association; Hostel (Mrs. J. Muir Barr, chairman). House (Mrs. C. F. Snowdon, chairman), Cafeteria (Mrs. J. M. Murdoch, chairman), Holiday House (Mrs. G. H. Wilson, chairman). Girls’ Department (Miss Daisy Dempsey, chairman), Senior and Educational Department (Mrs. W. Todd Smith chairman). Health and Recreation Department (Mrs. J. C. Dickinson, chairman), Membership (Mrs. W. M. McCormick, chairman). Immigration (Mrs. D. G. Cole, chairman). World Fellowship (chairman still to be appointed). Finance Committee (Mrs. M. Rudd, chairman). Executive (Mrs. C. W. Garrard, chairman), Y.W.C.A. Business Girls’ Club (Miss E. Fleming, chair-
man). Mrs. M. Rudd, treasurer, brought forward a recommendation of the Membership Committee that a membership drive be undertaken to secure new women members. The Y.W.C.A. felt very strongly that the work of the association should be brought prominently before the womanhood of the city in order to secure the interest, service, sympathetic understanding and financial support of a much larger number of women. Miss Begg, general secretary, emphasised the fact that the women membership was the backbone of the association, and that in a large community like Auckland there should be at least 5,000 women standing behind the Y.W.C.A. —the only non-sectarian organisation for the development and training of the girlhood of the city. She commended the membership drive
about to commence, and asked for enthusiastic assistance in this educational campaign. During the afternoon enjoyable and much-appreciated items were rendered by Misses Anderson, Reid and Connell, and afternoon tea was dispensed. AVIATION From London comes word that Lady Hoare, wife of Sir Samuel Hoare, the Air Minister, accompanied her husband on a flight from England to India. This is the longest flight yet undertaken by a woman. FROM IRELAND To the list of women in Australia who have attained their hundredth birthday has been added Mrs. Buchanan, of Baerami (N.S.W.). She came to Australia from Ireland when only a child and, after a few years at Windsor, went to live at Baerami over 70 years ago. On her 100th birthday Mrs. Buchanan was able to demonstrate that she could read and thread a needle without the aid of spectacles. When preparing grape-fruit, after removing the pips and the entire core, fill the hole with seedless raisins. Leave for a few hours before serving and the flavour will be delicious. • • * A squeeze of lemon in any stew or hash will greatly improve the flavour
