A FIJI PIONEER
DEATH OF MRS. J. B. TURNER An old and highly-esteemed resident of Fiji has died. She was Mrs. Mary Agnes Turner', widow of the late Hon. J. B. Turner. Mrs. Turner came to Fiji in a sailing vessel in 1870, when Cakabau was the chief ruler in these islands, and when his “army” was paramount. She had many adventures in Fiji in those days. In 1879 she married Mr. Turner at Levuka, and went to live in his estate at Naivalivali, on the Rewa River. The Hon. J. B. Turner died in Auckland about two years and a-lialf ago. He made a large and valuable contribution of South Seas curios to the Auckland Museum. Mrs. Turner is survived by three children, one of whom is the wife of the Hon. Alport Barker, a native of Christchurch. ROYAL TRESSES Although King George is said to look unfavourably on the modern “crop,” Princess Arthur of Connaught has had her beautiful fair hair shingled again after allowing it to grow for several months. Princess Arthur had her hair cropped for the first time when her husband was Governor-General of South Africa. With the exception of Lady Carisbrooke, daughter-in-law of Princess Beatrice, Princess Arthur is the only shingled member of the Royal Family.
