Miss Daphne Knight has been appointed judge for the dancing sections of the forthcoming Manawatu Competitions. Miss Rita Gannaway has returned to Auckland after a visit to Christchurch and South Canterbury. Mrs. W. E. Bush has returned to town after spending a holiday in the country. Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Allan of Devonport, who have been spending a holiday at Rotorua, returned to Auckland recently. Mrs. and Miss Pike are Wellington visitors to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. P. Herman' are Aucklanders at present in Wellington. “It is a big problem, the problem of deserted wives,” declared Mrs. W. G. Roberts at the annual meeting of the Wellington Society for the Protection of Women' and Children at Christchurch. “Personally, I think that is due in a great measure to unfit marriages. Some young people enter on married life without a thought of their responsibility. We find wives of nineteen, twenty and twenty-one, deserted and left with perhaps one or two babies to look after. They rush into matrimony.” A pleasantly informal little party took place at the Wellington Lyceum Club on Friday afternoon when the members of the newly-formed “Writers’ Corner” had the pleasure of meeting? Miss Edith Lytteltin (G. B. Lancaster), and talking over affairs of mutual interest, says an exchange. The room was charmingly decorated with autumn flowers, and a delicious tea was served. A circle was formed round the guest of honour, and, all being introduced by the president, Mrs. J. C. Anderson, quite a delightful time was spent. Mrs. King, Miss Lyttelton’s hostess, was among those present. Re gret was expressed that Miss Lyttelton was leaving v for the South that evening, and hopes erpressed that the would stay longer in Wellington on her . return. Mrs. Cyril Stringer, of Christchurch, will visit Auckland this week for a short holiday. * * * Mrs. J. F. Green, of Christchurch, is a visitor to Auckland. * Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Milliard are Wellington visitors to Auckland. * * * A proposed convention for the reform of the Constitution of the Province of San Juan (Argentina) would give women equal voting po.wer with men, for the first time in South America. * * * Frau Stadratin Klara Meyl has represented the Burgermeister of Berlin, during his absence, acting also as president of the Board of Magistrates. It is the first time that a woman has acted as burgermeister, and is specially significant, since it has occurred in the biggest city of Germany, says the I.SA. News service.

Hislop. of Wellington, are staying at the Royal Hotel. Mrs. Iverslake, of Nelson, is a visitor to town and is staying at the Royal Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. J. 11. Percy, of Masterton, are staying at the Royal Hotel. Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Monney and Mrs. Burford, of Adelaide, are among the guests at the Royal Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Andrews, of Paeroa, are staying at the Commercial Hotel.
