GUNBOAT ATTACKED
FIRE RETURNED BRITISH ENGAGED ON YANGTZE CABINET DISCUSSES SITUATION (.British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11.10 a.m. RUGBY, Wednesday. One of the latest incidents In the Yangtse region is the attack which was made yesterday near Chinkiang on the British gunboat Cockchafer. The Cockchafer returned the fire with her main armament of two six-inch guns. The Cockchafer was the gunboat concerned in the Wanhsien action, where her commanding officer. NORTHERN REVERSE OVER 1,000 DROWNED By Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright SHANGHAI. Tuesday. A tragic reverse was suffered by Northern Chinese troops on the Yang-tse-kiang River near Nanking. Two launches were towing several boat filled with Northerners in an attempt to reach the southern hank of the river. They were revealed by a searchlight to soldiers in a fort. Eighty shells were fired from the fort at the boats, all of which were sunk. It is believed that more than 1,000 Northerners were drowned.—A. and N.Z. , MARCHING TO HANKOW ‘CHRISTIAN’ GENERAL ADVANCES SHANGHAI, Wednesday. Interest in the military situation in Central China has been revived by the confirmation of the report that Feng Yu-hsiang, the "Christian” general who has long been inactive, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Hankow group of armies to succeed Marshal Chiang Kai-shek. The Fengtien forces, commanded by General Chang Sueh-liang, son of Marshal Chang Tso-lin, are now pressing toward Hankow.—A. and N.Z.
