In addition to the “Creation,” which will be presented on May 26, and Verdi’s “Aida” in August next, the Auckland Choral Society has decided to give a miscellaneous concert some time in November, when among other works Pietro Mascagni’s opera, “Cavalleria Rustincana” will be sung. The “Creation” and “Aida” both requiring a large chorus, an attempt is now being made by the society to bring the strength of the choir up to 300 voices. With the vocal talent available in Auckland it is considered that this should be well within the grounds of possibility. On the grounds that increased membership will enable the society to carry out educational work among the young people, and incidentally maintain a higher standard in an age of lowered musical tastes, an appeal is also being made to secure a thousand subscribers. The Auckland Society is the first musical society in New Zealand to attempt “Aida,” and it is indeed to be hoped that such a progressive and well deserving institution is not hampered for want of public support.

In the winter course of lectures and entertainments which will be inaugurated on May 3 with the Remuera course will be included musical entertainments and lectures on musical subjects. The opening programme at Remuera will be undertaken by Mr. Frank Adeane, secretary of the Auckland Competitions Society, while later In the season a “Gilbert and Sullivan" recital will be given by Mr. Karl Atkinson, a well-known authority on that ;übject. At Grey Lynn concerts will )e arranged by Messrs. Lewis R. Eady nd Son, Ltd., and Mr. Walter Impett. Richard Strauss is eported to have sen secured to con.uct twenty per • ormances during he coming season of he Staatsoper of r ienna, opening his ngagement with the ocal premiere of his >wn opera, “Internezzo.” For the forthcoming competitions at almerston North Messrs. Cyril Towsey and J. T. Montague, of Auckland, have been appointed adjudicators in the musical and elocutionary sections respectively.
