WANGANUI ANXIOUS
LABOUR MAYOR’S ELECTION A DIVERSION OF OPINION (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, To-day. A\ anganui to-day does not know quite whether to rejoice or weep over the election of a Labour secretary to the highest position in the city. Many predict disaster, while others consider the majority of the ratepayers did the best thing to kill what was considered a spirit of autocracy growing up in the community. They took exception to the business of the city being done in committee, discussion in open council being very limited. So much so that council meetings lasted hardly half an hour and sometimes less. The mayor, Mr. Hope Gibbons, ran affairs upon what was considered the business lines of work, not talk. The public, on the other hand, wanted to know what was happening. Mr. Rogers, the Labour candidate, came forward and offered free, open discussions in the council, with a promise to reduce rates. Hence, he caught popular favour. Mr. A. G. Bignell,' chairman of the Harbour Board, also had a narrow' shave, polling the lowest of the six candidates elected.
