BLACKMAIL THREAT
WEALTHY DEALER’S CHARGE HIS CAREER THREATENED By 'Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. Israel Melcher, aged 54, was charged at Old Bailey with attempting to blackmail Mr. Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury. The. evidence showed that Rubin’s father acquired a fortune in the West Australian pearl trade and sent Melcher to Shark’s Bay buying pearls. Melcher said he lived a lonely life for seven years and then his health broke down. The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to disclose that Rubin was paying secret commissions and thus ruin his political career. It was also alleged that Melcher retained papers appertaining to Rubin’s business. Rubin denied all the allegations made against him. The hearing was adjourned.—A. and N.Z.
