MINING NEWS

GOLDEN AGE.—The mine manager reports for the week ending April 13: “We commenced rising over where we saw gold in the level. The reef is heavily mineralised. A distance of sft. has been risen for the week. The crosscut has been cleaned out a further distance of 80ft, and three sets of timber position. Another 50ft. should put us into the face.” LUCKY SHOT.—Reporting progress for the week ending April 23, the mine manager states: “The drive north-east on No. 1 reef through the break has been advanced a total distance of 19ft. Driving in this direction, the reef showed strong colours of gold. No work has been done on this reef going west since mv last report. We cross-cut through to the hanging wall of No. 3 reef, which proved to be 12ft. in width. We have cut out a chamber on this reef 14ft. by 10ft. When timbered up we will sink on the reef to prove its value; going down from this point x where we intend sinking, will be the most convenient place to prospect No. 1 and No. 2 reefs.” HAURAKI.—The manager wired yesterday as follows: “Water lowered to 46 feet below 160 level. Top plunger showing 4ft. above water on top stroke. Machinery working well.” NEW WAI OTA Hl.—The drive hillward on the Waiotahi-Cambria reef has been extended 10ft. on the course of the break for the week ending April 23. The country rock on the footwall side is a mild andesite carrying mineral seams and a little water is making in the floor of the drive, evidently coming from the break. The drive on the main reef from the bottom of the \ninze has been extended 4ft. The quartz is carrying iron pyrites, zinc blend and silica. The footwall country is interlaced with mineral seams and quartz veins. A -further 10ft. of driving should prove its value opposite where gold was got in the footwall leader.
