Makura Strikes Whale. —The Union Steam Ship Company’s mail steamer Makura, which arrived at Wellington yesterday from Sydney, came into violent collision with a large whale during her recent trip from Wellington to Sydney. The ship was undamaged, but the whale, which had evidently been on the surface, was completely cut in half. This is the third occasion within the past few months that a passenger steamer crossing between Australia and New Zealand has struck a whale. _ _
