A SUNDAY ROBBER

LONG CHAIN OF THEFTS NEAT CATCH BY POLICE Press Association DUXEDIN, Tuesday. In the Police Court, Alfred Ernest Walter Caldwell, married, with three children, was charged with breaking and entering. The police stated that there would probably be 25 charges against the accused, who was remanded. Bail was refused. By the arrest two constables had terminated a long series of thefts. In the early hours cf Sunday morning, they noticed a man on a bicycle ride into a lane. Cautiously following and climbing a fence, they discovered two shops broken into. Further search disclosed Caldwell in a right-of-way in possession of a quantity of stolen property, leather gloves and keys, taken from other premises. Later a detective visited Caldwell’s house and found a heterogenous collection of articles, which he confessed to having stolen.

The accused stated that he never began operating till after 2 a.m., later returning home to get ready for work as a corporation labourer. He admitted that all the cases of shop-breaking lately reported were due to his efforts. He had also broken into two Post Office letter boxes.
