FIRE AT BIRKENHEAD

COTTAGE DESTROYED BRIGADE’S ATTEMPTS FAIL A four-roomed cottage in Rawene Road, Birkenhead, owned by Mr. J. Taylor, was completely gutted by fire last night. The house was unoccupied, and there was no furniture in it. The fire was first noticed by a resident of Northcote, who gave the alarm to the Northcote Volunteer Fire Brigade. By the time that the fire brigade arrived on the scene the flames, fanned by a strong southerly wind had obtained a good hold of the building, which was constructed of totara timber. Despite repeated attempts the brigade -were not able to save the house. Mr. Taylor is in Hamilton at present. The cause of the fire is unknown. The insurances on the building are not known.
