CAMBRIDGE MEETING
HANDICAPS DECLARED The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. C. G. Goosman for the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting:
ASHBURTON MEETING GOOD SPORT PROVIDED NANTWICH WINS HANDICAP (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Ashburton Trotting Club’s Autumn Meetings was held in fine but windy weather. There was a big attendance and the course was in splendid order. THE FAVOURITE LANDS The favourite, Princess Dillon, was driven a patient race in the Improvers’ Handicap, which she just won from an outsider in Lady Barrister. John Dee led for a mile and then tired. Helen went away fairly well, but was never prominent. Among the beaten division that promises well were Bankhead and Firebrand. A MIX-UP Oval was elected a screaming hot favourite for the Allenton Handicap and he led all the way to win easing up by a dozen lengths. Mickey Audubon dived across the track at the start, unshipped his driver and interfered with the field except the winner. NANTWICH STAYS ON
Rey Logan and Author Jinks were stout favourites for the Durbar Handicap. Author Jinks went a slashing race, being beaten by Nantwich, who came in the straight and beat her opponents pointless. With five furlongs covered Author Jinks was in front, being followed closely by Avenger, Lyonwood, Peter Swift, Zolock Palm, Lady Embrace, Succession, Rey Logan, Locanda Child and Nantwich. Zolock Palm, Lyonwood and Succession were beaten at the entrance to the straight. A furlong from home Avenger and Author Jinks were just in front of Lady Embrace, Locanda Child, Nantwich and Stunt Artist. In a splendid finish Nantwich won well by two lengths from Author Jinks, with Lady Embrace, Locanda Child and Avenger all in a bunch, being within half a length of Author Jinks. Jolly Chimes tailed off early and Pan Yan cracked up early in the contest. Peter Swift was with the leaders for a mile and three quarters when he broke. It was a great race. At the direction of the stewards Kotuku Jack was withdrawn from the Durbar Handicap owng to the horse stopping so badly when something came over him in his two races at the Easter meeting at Addington. A GENUINE SORT Genuine made no race of the Harvest Handicap, which he won very easily. La Sonnette and Kreisler were
with the leaders for a mile, where they dropped back. Gibraltar tired badlj three furlongs from the finish and Dartagnan did well to finish second. The winner is a good sort. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN Mavis Wood improved ten seconds on her time and beat a hot favourite in Great Earl, who lost ground at the start by breaking. Mac Dillon, who finished third, went a good race. The others were welt down the course. The contest was the Autumn Handicap. LITTLE JOHNNIE COMES HOME A short-priced favourite in Kempton looked a certain winner in the Utility Handicap. He took charge seven furlongs from home and was well clear of Little Johnnie when the straight was reached, but twenty yards from the post he stopped to a walk, thus allowing Little Johnnie to beat him by three-quarters of a length. St. Petrox, who started in the Allenton Handicap was, owing to his bad exhibition in that race, not allowed to start in the Utility Handicap. HAROLD THORPE IMPRESSES Harold Thorpe won the Rakaia Handicap in impressive style from Bold Bill, who made a break a hundred yards from home. Even if he had not made a break Bold Bill would not have beaten the winner. Locanda Child had every chance, but was not good enough. Rufine, Harold Burwood. Trimmer, Oboe, M. Wilkes, Hoon Ha-y and Avenger were in the leading division for a mile, but all failed to come on when the pressure was applied. Ayr was never in the picture and Mac De Oro was well down the course at the finish. LOCHREE VICTORIOUS The Farewell Handicap was won by a hot favourite in Lochree. He was all out aL the finish to beat Lulu Lad, j who made a break over the last twenty yards. Nothing looked like beating the winner.
