RAILWAY OFFICERS IN BIG THEFT CHARGES

THREE MEN IN DOCK Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Evidence was taken before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning on the two further charges of theft preferred against three ex-officers of the Railway Department. When Gavin Gordon Watson and John James Neilson, who are awaiting trial in the Supreme Court on charges of stealing approximately £5,000 from the railway Department, appeared before the Court last Friday on two further charges, a remand was granted until to-day. It was stated that a third man would appear. The third man is Michael Lyons. He was jointly charged with Watson and Neilson with stealing various sums of money amounting in all to £1,147 Is, and the other charge, involving £1,205 2s sd. was preferred against Watson and Neilson. It was agreed to take the two charges together. Departmental officials gave evidence that part of the system adopted by the accused was to sign the pay-sheets for men still on sick leave and not entitled to pay during such periods, also to sign for men who were not in the service, or who had left the service.
