STRAND THEATRE
“EVERY MOTHER’S SON” Tlie humour and the tragedy cf war are cleverly interwoven in “Every Mother’s Son,” now showing at the Strand Theatre. This is one cf the big new British pictures which are challenging America’s lilm supremacy. The story deals with the experiences of a group of friends during the Great War, and more particularly with one of the number, an ordinary English countryman, the son of humble parents. An all-British cast features Gladys Hamer, Captain Hex' Davis, M.C., and Frederick Cooper, M.C. Every actor in the cast served in the British Army during the war. Great attention has been paid to detail in the film, and a relic of old London is shown in one scene. This is in the form of one of the first horse-drawn omnibuses. It has not carried passengers on the London streets for the last 50 years. It was only brought out from its long retirement to give the exact atmosphere to a part of the film representing a scene in London many years ago. The supporting pictures include a Strand Magazine, an Aesop’s fable, “The Cat That Failed,” a nature study feature, “Hunting the Spider,” and a comedy. Miss Margaret Stoddart, the talented Auckland violinist, delights the ear with a selection from her repertoire. Her rendering of Coleridge Taylor’s “Gipsy Dance” called forth enthusiastic and continued applause last night. Special mention must be made of the fine musical programme of appropriate British music, played by the Strand Symphony Orchestra throughout the British film, “Every Mother’s Son.” The overture is another British composition, Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance.”
