RAILWAY GUARDS
ANNUAL SOCIAL HELD The second social of the 1927 series, arranged by the Auckland District Guards’ Club, was held in the railway social hall on Saturday evening. The president of the club, Mr. H. Reeves, occupied the chair. A lengthy toast list was honoured during the course of the evening, and an enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental items was given by club members. In replying to the toast of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, Mr. J. Elliott, a member of the North Island executive of the body, and a candidate for the presidency, said consideration must be given to the question of the amalgamation of the three branches of the railway service, the A.S.R.S., the Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association, and the Tradesmen’s Association. He stated that a conference is being called this month by the Railway Department, of representatives of the three branches to discuss the formation of a National Railway Sick and Accident scheme. Two representatives from each of the above associations will be present. The Railway Officers’ Institute was represented by Mr. R. T. Spencer, who spoke of the cordial relations existing between the officers and men of the service. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to THE SUN, and wished the new paper every success. Mr. Elliott also referred to the coming of Auckland’s new daily, which, he said, should satisfy the city’s long-felt requirement in this connection. In remembrance of their comrades who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, all present stood for a few moments in respectful silence.
