TYPHOID FEVER IN MAORI FAMILY

FOLLOWERS OF RATANA INOCULATION REFUSED Being followers of Ratana, a family of five Maoris living at Kerepehi, on the Piako River, refused to be inoculated when they contracted typhoid fever. Dr. C. H. Chesson, medical officer for health in charge of the Auckland district, commented on this fact on Saturday, and said that there were many followers of Ratana who set up a barrier against the Department's protective measures, and the result was that those who were not inoculated were generally the first to catch typhoid. Kerepehi is a small village in the Hauraki Plains County, and the Health Department does not anticipate that the outbreak will spread.
