Birkenhead Remembers the Falien
Unveiling of Memorial To-morrow’s Ceremony Birkenhead unveils its memorial to its soldiers of the Great War tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock. On the Civic Reserve at Highbury Corner, the residents have erected their tribute to the fallen. A rock wall encloses pleasant lawns, which surround the memorial. Two octagonal tiers of concrete steps lead up to a massive block of rough-hewn granite surmounted by four polished redgranite columns. These represent Duty, Service, Fidelity and Justice. Above all is a floral standard on bronze, bearing the olive leaf and the victor's wreath. The cost of the memorial is about £3OO, and the design is by Mr. F. Finch. Mrs. Neal, representing the parents of the fallen soldiers' will unveil the memorial, and the mayoress. Miss Skeates, will place a wreath of remembrance at its base. The mayor, Mr. E. S. Skeates, Mr. A. Harris, M.P., Mr. J. H. McNish (represei#ing the returned soldiers), will be the speakers, and the Revs- H. H. Bedford and J. H. Allen will conduct the service. This will be preceded by a parade of returned soldiers, Senior Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Brownies, and by the borough band.
