A LITTLE WORLD FOR LITTLE PEOPLE
DING DONG BELL COMPETITION TIME •piXG-A-DING. Ring-a-ding. Ding-dong-bell!” 1\ “What’s that ?” exclaimed the man who keeps the Joy; Shop. “Not a fire surely!” “Of course not,” answered the Dawn Lady. “That’s a joy bell. It’s competition time.” “Oh, I see,” he murmured, his merry eyes twinkling. “And who is ringing it?” “The Little Thought. He has just given his orders to the pixie postmen and is now ringing the bell to tell all the Sunbeams about it. Sunbeams are clever little folk and they love being put on their mettle.” “They like excitement and expectancy too,” said the Doorkeeper of the Place-of-You-Never-Can-Tell. “And they like results,” added the Dawn Lady. “And what are the competitions this time?” queried the man who keeps the Joy Shop. “If you listen the bell will tell you,” said the Dawn Lady. And those merry notes came tumbling down singing a joyous song: “Ding-dong. Competitions. All of you like competitions. “Who will enter? Who will try? Do not let the chance slip by. Ding-dong, Sunbeams all, hear the silver joy bells call. Stories, stories, who can write a tale about the elfin sprite, whose picture greets you on this page—a fairy from another age? “Ding-dong, who can sing a song to please a queen or king? Little poets gather round; capture all the grace of sound. Can you see the mellow stars peeping through the window bars? Can you find the words that play a rhyming game at dawn of day? Ding-dong, who can draw? Who can artists’ dreams explore? Who can leave in black and white pictures for the heart’s delight. Ding-dong, Sunbeams all, hear the silver joy bells call. . * .” “Well I never!” exclaimed the man who keeps the Joy Shop. “It is certainly a pleasant tune.”
