MIDNIGHT
Twelve clear notes from the belfry tower! Twelve is the night’s enchanted hour. The gay little grasshopper tilts his chin f And under it tucks his violin, For when twelve silvery clappers chime ’Tis the little green fiddler’s fiddling time. Faintly the last dim echoes died, Into the glade the fairies ride, Some on a monobeam’s glittering shaft, Some on a lily’s leafy raft; One is missing, he stands beguiled, Whispering dreams to a sleeping child. Dreams and fancies—a fairy’s dower, Offered at night’s enchanted hour.
