AVONDALE RACES
To-day’s Sport at Ellerslie FAVOURITE WINS HURDLES All-Aged Stakes Goes to Lady Cavendish The autumn gathering of the Avondale Jockey Club opened at Ellerslie to-day with bright prospects, fine weather, a large attendance, big fields, and an excellent track ensuring success from the outset. Principal interest to-day was centred upon the races for the All-Aged Stakes and the Foley Memorial Handicap, but these two events, outstanding as they were, formed only portion of a very interesting programme. Drizzling rain set in after the fourth race. Results were as follow:

An Easy One In a nineteen-horse field for the Maiden Plate, backers plumped for Whaka King, the top weight carrying two and a-half times as much as Wyoming. From an indifferent start Whaka King and Harbour View were the first to become prominent, being followed out by Josie Melville, Rina Mangu and Charitaine, but before the field had traversed a furlong Lady Robinson had taken charge, being clear at the half-mile from Josie Melville, Harbour View, Whaka King, Rina Mangu, Cynthia N and Charitaine. Lady Robinson had an advantage of half a dozen lengths into the straight, being pursued by Harbour View, Elmestra, Whaka King, Rina Mangu, Josie Melville, Charitaine and Cynthia N. In the run home Lady Robinson was not seriously bothered to score by four lengths from Harbour View, with the favourite three lengths away. Rina Mangu was fourth, Scot Free fifth and Wonder Star, Cynthia N and Elmestra next. HOBSONVILLE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Of 300sovs.; 12 miles. 1— DAY BELL (Dr. W. C. Day Bell was a big favourite, being entrusted with £l3l more than Archibald, and there was a big drop to Kawa. Kawa was in front passing the stands the first time, being followed at this stage by Te Tahi, Dead Sweet, Archibald, Day Bell, Glenotus, Marita, Blue Sky, Slump, Peter Rosa and Gold Rain, the last named falling at the hurdle going out of the straight. At the six furlong Te Tahi had gone to the front, but he was not there long, those behind him being Day Bell, Kawa, Archibald, Glenotus and Peter Rosa, the remainder being out of the hunt. Day Bell was in the van at the five furlongs, and the favourite led into the straight from Archibald, Peter Rosa, Te Tahi, Kawa, Glenotus and Slump, the first three mentioned being well clear of the others. Day Bell was too good for Archibald in the run up the straight and beat him by a length and a-half. Peter Rosa was half a dozen lengths away, Glenotus being fourth and Te Tahi and Dead Sweet next. Won by half a length, a neck between second and third. Time, 2.7 3-5. A Surprise Result The Foley Memorial Handicap resulted in a great race, with a fine finish seeing an outsider get home. The Thorn was the actual favourite, the Absurd gelding carrying a little more than Transformer and Eden Hall, both evenly supported, with a drop of over £SOO to Day Guard, the fourth fancy. A good start and the field came along in line for a .bit before Day Guard went into the lead, being followed out of the straight by Master Doon. The Thorn, Curraghmore, Flying Juliet, Hipo, Papatu, Transformer, Mosaic. Oreum, Miss Vera. Lord Star, Eden Hall, Barometer, Mint Leaf and Income. Passing the six furlongs Day Guard was bowling along in the van, The Thorn and Flying Juliet being close up. Master Doon, Hipo, Curraghmore, Transformer, Papatu, Mosaic. Lord Star and Eden Hall being next in order. At the half-mile Master Doon had run up second to Day Guard. Flying Juliet, Hipo, Eden Hall, Transformer and Curraghmore being next, The Thorn being already well beaten. Day Guard, Transformer, Flying Juliet, Hipo, Eden Hall and Curraghmore was the order into the straight, and in a slashing finish Papatu came up on the outer in time to beat Hipo by half a length, with Flying Juliet, Eden Hall and Day Guard all bunched right up. Next were Mint Leaf, Transformer and Mosaic. The winner went down very sore and his win came as a i great surprise-.

King Arch 8.10, Bright Dawn 7.12, and Killute 7.5 scratched. Won by a length, a head between second and third. Time, 1.39 3-5. Easy For Town Guard Backers fell over themselvs to be on Town Guard in the Oakley Hack Handicap, and the Archiestown tliree-year-old was sent out at a very cramped price. There was also some money for Ballachulish, but nothing really had a chance with the favourite, who won very easily. Air Queen got a bit the worst of a good start, Judge’s Box being the first to show out from Branson, Modest Boy, Town Guard, Wenday, Lady Spalpeen, Alonsoa, Ballachulish. Lady Cynthia, War Officer, and Air Queen. At the end of a couple of furlongs the favourite .had run to the front, and he led past the halfmile from Modest Boy, Branson. Lady Spalpeen. Festina Lente and Judge’s Box. The favourite was ‘still going easily in front at the turn for home, Modest Boy, Festina Lente, Lady Spalpeen, Air Queen, and Judge’s Box following. Nothing had a chance with Town Guard in the straight, the favourite going on to score a comfortable win by a length from Branson, who finished too strong for Modest Boy, the latter being ousted by a head for the second dividend. Judge’s Box was fourth, and Lady Cintra, Air Queen, Lady Spalpeen and Wenday followed in that order. All Aged Stakes Of l.OOOsovs; 6 furlongs. I—LADY CAVENDISH (G. F.
