THE MELBOURNE CRASH
INQUIRY OPENED LOW-ALTITUDE QUESTION By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright MELBOURNE, Friday. The aviation authorities deny that yesterday’s flying accident was caused by the low altitude at which the machines were flying. They say the flying was never dangerously low. There never was a time when the airplanes could not have come down on to the emergency landing places without difficulty. There were 3S machines in the air to welcome the Duke and Duchess of York, and it is now considered likely that in future a smaller number will be used on similar occasions. A departmental inquiry into the cause of the crash has been opened and is sitting in camera. The crash was seen by the Duke of York, but the Duchess, fortunately, was away inspecting Girl Guides at the time.—A. and N.Z.
