ST. DAVID’S CHURCH
LAYING THE STONE FUNCTION ON MONDAY | With the laying of the foundationstone of St. David’s Church on Monday, Anzac Day, an important stage in the progress of the Presbyterian congregation will be reached. The church, a brick structure, is replacing the old wooden building that has graced Khyber Pass for many years. The new church is a memorial to those men of the congregation who fell in the Great War. The inscription on the stone reads: “To the Glory of God and in proud memory of the St. David’s men who, for the permanent peace of the world, gave their lives in the Great War, 1914-18, this stone was laid by Duncan Macpherson, senior elder, Rev. D. C. Herron, M.C., M.A., minister.” The service will commence at 2.30 p.m., the Rev. J. A. Thomson, moderator of the Auckland Presbytery, and the Rev. Dr. H. Ranston, representing the Council of Christian Congregations, will be present. The new church, which is to cost about £16,000, was started about three months ago, and it is hoped that the congregation will be in occupation at the end of the year. The first St. David Church was erected in Symonds Street in 1864. A new building was erected in the same locality in 1880 and was removed to the Khyber Pass site in 1902. The foundation-stone to be laid on Monday was presented by Messrs. McNab and Mason and is of ebony black granite from Sweden.
