DERBY CANDIDATES NEXT SEASON’S PROSPECTS YOUNGSTER’S FORM REVIEWED The two-year-olds of the season provide an abundance of interesting study. There is no doubt that the average quality is better than that- of many years, but whether the juveniles will justify the year being alluded to as a vintage one, yet remains to be seen, writes “Vedette” in an interesting review of next season’s Derby prospects. Agrion, Eulalie, Gascony, Cima* buc, Damaris, Paganelli, Laughing Prince, In the Shade. Royal Ceres and Paleta, are certainly a formidable batid. GOES VERY FAST Eulalie’s brilliant win in the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes supports the contention that she is superior to Agrion over a purely sprint course. Gascony is good, but on Auckland form, not much better, if any, than In the Shade or Paganelli, both of whom have shown a vast improvement during the autumn. Cimabue will be purely a sprinter, and possibly a real out-and-out topnotcher over short courses, for he is wonderfully brilliant, and up to any amount of weight. In the hands of a leading trainer he would always have to be reckoned with in any sprint race. TOO BIG Damaris is a beautiful filly and a great strider. This will always b . against her on small or undulating courses. Laughing Prince, who has done good things this season, might easily turn out the best of the three-year-olds next year. Royal Ceres has been off the scene since the mid-sum-mer, and he is receiving* s every chance. This leaves Paleta, who beat Laughing Prince comfortably at even weights at Trentham in January. In the search for Derby horses, Agrion, Gascony, Laughing Prince and Paganelli are the likely ones, while F. Dav's has an admirable second string in Great Charter, yet to show his best. At the present time there are “ifs” and “buts” in regard to the bre- ".ng of all of these when racing over a Derby course is considered. ABOUT GASCONY Gascony, of course, has the best credentials, but one cannot get away from Agrion, Laughing Prince and Paganelli. Gascony, by King John from a comparatively you: g mare in First Blow (Finland —War Talk), was foaled after his dam had had a year’s rest. He is in F. Davis’s hands, and has done well all through the season. When Agrion beat him at Ellerslie at Christmas time he was not as forward as the winner, and in addition was opposed by Eulalie, who carried him along for the first part of the race and left Agrion to finish him off. Gascony is not engaged in Australia, so is a certainty, bar accidents, to contest the New Zealand classic races next year. Agrion no doubt will go to Sydney this winter, and run for the A.J.C. Derby in Australia. Then, of course, he could come home for the Derby at Riccarton. On his dam’s side, Waterwings, suggests speed rather than stamina, yet in his two-year-old races he has always shown signs of staying on after beginning slowly. Waterwings is by Absurd from the Seaton Delaval mare Sea Elf, so a sister to Mermin. As Agrion is trained by R. J. Mason, possibly that will be his greatest asset when his prospects are really weighed up. IN THE RIGHT HANDS Laughing Prince, by a smart galloper in Quantock, is from a stout Martian mare. He lias shown great ability to stay on under big weights in bad ground, so can be looked on as a possible stayer. Now trained by F. Tilley at Fordell, he will lack nothing in his preparation, this, be it said, without disparagement to J. McLaughlin, who did exceedingly well with Laughing Prince, and to whom all credit is due for his successful two-year-old career. This leaves Paganelli. By Lord Quex, an unknown quantity as a sire of stayers, from an old mare Ringdove, he has something against him on the breeding side. His efforts this year, however, have been one steady improvement, and it will not be at all surprising to find him holding his own in the races next year over Derby There is one gratifying feature concerning next season’s prospects, and that is that the three-year-old races should be of prime interest. This year Limerick’s mishap in the spring and his activities later in Australia left Commendation the only Richmond in the field.
