A PROBLEM

' THE GREAT NORTHERNS HUNTERVILLE OWNER’S TEAM NGATA, BRIGADIER BILL, OMAHU 1 Once again has the Hunterville sportsman, Mr, James Bull, set racegoers a problem in their efforts to solve the puzzle of the Great Northerns. Perhaps their task on this occasion will not be so formidable as some that the Southern owner has set them in the past, for his candidates at the forthcoming meeting are not to be compared with those that have carried the green jacket and green cap with distinction at Ellerslie. OMAHU’S PRELIMINARIES In June, Mr. Bull will probably have three horses at Ellerslie —Ngata, Brigadier Bill and Omahu. As previously stated in these columns, Omahu is to follow the same programme as was adopted last year. It is intended to race the black Maniapoto gelding in the hurdle events at Awapuni next week, and afterwards, if all goes well with him, he will most likely do the Egmont and Wanganui meetings, Doth popular hunting grounds for the owner of this fine jumper. Omahu figures in the Great Northern Steeplechase and the Winter Steeplechase, and it is likely that these will be his engagements if brought North. TWO IN FORM It is different with Ngata and Brigadier Bill, for they are the pair that will tangle the early birds. They are both in the Great Northern Hurdles, and the latter is also in the Steeplechase. Ngata, on the other hand, is in the Hurdles and Cornwall Handicap, each run the first day, and although of course one cannot say with any degree of certainty what the actual programme is to be, so far as these two are concerned, it may be that Ngata will be saddled up in the flat race, leaving Brigadier Bill to contest the Great Northern Hurdles, and the next day, if satisfactory, he may be allowed to assist Omahu to win the Steeplechase. Ngata won well at Feilding last Monday, and this leads one to suppose that he will most likely take on the flat race at Ellerslie. A GOOD HURDLER In Brigadier Bill, Mr. Bull will have a fine hurdler to represent him here, for he has already won distinction over the sticks without having a great number of opportunities. He has pace too, for he won on the flat on Easter Saturday at Feilding, so there is no doubt about him being in racing condition. Ngata we know as a rare good hurdler, but he is ageing, and those legs of his require rather delicate handling. He may not yet be a spent light, so perhaps it were wise to await the Maniapoto gelding’s arrival at Ellerslie before taking him on side. Last season Ngata showed that he was just as good a jumper as ever, although advancing years had somewhat discounted the pace he once had. Now he appears to be taking a new lease of life.
