NOTES ON CANDIDATES In view of the number of candidates who are contesting the City Council election , and the impossibility of electors being acquainted with all of them , THE SUN has prepared a short note on the personal history of each candidate , and these will be published in daily sections . MR. R. F. BARTER: Mr: R. F. Barter is contesting his fourth municipal election. Born at Torquay 43 years ago, he has been 17 years in New Zealand. He has been secretary of the Engineers’ Union for the past ten years. Mr. Barter is a member of the Board of Governors of the Technical College and takes a prominent part in the Friendly Society movement. For three years he was secretary of the Labour Day Committee and he was the Dominion representative of the engineers before the Arbitration Court. MR. S. I. CROOKS: Mr. Crooks is a consulting engineer in the middle 60’s. Member of retiring City Council. Served on parks and library committees. Is a member of the Auckland University College Council and is chairman of the works committee of the Auckland Power Board. Was also member of Auckland Grammar School Board and Technical College Board. MR. J. DEMPSEY: For 12 years Mr. Dempsey, who is in his 60’s, has been member of Auckland City Council, serving on the works, tramways, water and electricity committees. Was chairman of Remuera Road Board prior to amalgamation with city. Served on Hospital Board for three years; member Auckland Power Board since its inception. * * * MR. J. DONALD: Mr. James Donald, also in the 60’s, is the managing director of A. Donald and Sons, fellmongers, etc. He was a member of the retiring Auckland City Council and was also a member of the Point Chevalier Road Board prior to the amalgamation of this suburb with the city. ♦ ♦ ♦ MR. L. A. EADY: Mr. Louis A. Eady is a younger man, being within the 40’s limit. He is managing director of piano importing firm of Eady and Sons and is member of executive of most of musical organisations in Auckland. Mr. Eady was member of retiring City Council, is a director of Ti'aders’ Finance Corporation and is on Auckland Navy League executive. « * * MR. A. J. ENTRICAN: One of Auckland’s best known public men and merchants, Mr. A. J. Entrican has served on City Council for 29 years. For many years was chairman finance committee and for over five years deputy-mayor. Past chairman Harbour Board, trustee Auckland Savings Bank, also Sinking Fund Commissioner of Auckland Drainage Board. * * * MR. D. FLYNN: Mr. David Flynn, who has reached the 60 limit, was formerly a wellknown Auckland coachbuilder. Since he retired a few years ago from business, which he founded. Mr. Flynn has interested himself in many public duties. This is the first time that he has offered himself for City Council. * * * MR. G. H. GUY: Standing as a candidate on the Independent Progressive ticket, Mr. Guy has been in business in Auckland for over 30 years. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, he came to New Zealand at the age of seven. After journeying back to the Old Country, and through America, he returned to New Zealand approximately 30 years ago. Was associated with “Auckland Herald” for IS years, going into business \on his own after this, and then later going on '' directorial staff of the “Pictorial News.” * * . MR. J. B. KING: Mr. J. B. King is an independent candidate, and is particularly interested in the traffic question, being a member of the Automobile Association Council. He came to New Zealand from Edinburgh, Scotland, 27 years ago, since when he has been in business in Auckland as a merchant plumber. He was a member of the Newmarket Borough Council and other bodies. * * * MR. J. R. LUNDON: Mr. J. R. Lundon, who has been selected for the City West ratepayers’ ticket, is a well-known solicitor, who commenced practice in Auckland in 1894. Although this is his first appearance as a candidate for the Auckland City Council, Mr. Lundon has considerable local body experience, having been a member of the Grey Lynn and Parnell Borough Councils prior to their absorption into the city. Has returned recently from Morrlnsville, where he was chairman of the Tatuanui School Committee. MR. W. H. MURRAY: Having retired from business and having ha t d previous experience Mr. W. H. Murray offers the city his services. He is a Justice of the Peace, 56 years of age, and was previously for eight years councillor or mayor of Grey Lynn. Present member of the Auckland Harbour Board, and supporter there of St. Mary’s Bay boat harbour. MR. FINDLAY McLIVER: A member of the legal profession and a young man still in the early thirties, Mr. Findlay D. McLiver is one of the younger school offering their services at this election. Mr. McLiver is well known in sporting circles and was born in Auckland. He goes to the poll as a nominee of the City West Ratepayers’ Association. MR. E. PHELAN: City Councillor,' Justice of the Peace, a founder of League Football in Auckland, trustee of the Veterans’ Home, a member of the Trades Hall Trust, secretary of the Timber Workers’ Union, member of the Patriotic Association and the Repatriation Board, Mr. E. Phelan can claim that his days have not been idle ones. Born in Auckland 52 years ago, he early associated himself with the Labour movement. He managed the League team which toured Australia in 1911.
