MOUNT ALBERT
MAYORALTY CAMPAIGN CAPTAIN ATWELL’S POLICY In furtherance of his campaign for the mayoralty of Mount Albert, Captain W. Atwell held two meetings yesterday—one in the Theatre Royal, Kingsland, and the other in the open air near Page’s Store, Kingsland. The meetings were well attended. Mr. J. Knight took the chair tt both meetings. The captain explained J»is policy for the supply of purer water, more efficient sanitation, and :he improvement of the roads. He also stated the amount of loan money shown as expended was excessive, viz., £93,005. Included in this amount is the sum of £43.810 for the purchase of plant. The expenditure of this large sum on plant was hard to understand, considering the history of the purchase « plant by the council in the past. The manner in which the council dealt with tenders received from contractors was also criticised. The speaker referred to an incident of recent date where the council accepted a tender that was £570 more than the lowest tender. A deputation which waited on the mayor, said the candidate, did not receive a satisfactory answer.
At both meetings a vote of confidence in the candidate was carried. The captain will address a meeting at the Jubilee Hall, Kingsland tomorrow evening at 8 o’clock, and an open-air meeting near the Council Chambers, Morningside, at 8 o’clock on Tuesday evening next.
