Japanese Fire.—A fire swept the town of Kanazawa, in the Ishikawa province. There was a high wind blowing and 1,000 houses were destroyed. The damage is estimated at £500,000. It is feared there w'ere many casualties. —A. and N.Z.

British Loan to Russia.—A British shipbuilding concern has approached the chief Concession Committee of the Soviet with an offer of £20,000,000 for long-term credits with which to build mercantile ships for the Soviet. It is understood that the offer is under consideration.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.

Old Resident Passes. —The death occurred on Wednesday evening at the »aikato Hospital of Mr. Edward Cox, a very old resident of Te Awamutu, at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Cox was of a genial disposition, and had jnany friends. He had been in failing health for many months.
