“I AM SANE”
SOLDIER ON TRIAL MURDERED HIS COLONEL By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright LONDON, Wednesday. A message from Gibraltar says Lieutenant Duffield was charged at the Police Court with the murder of Colonel Fitzgerald and was remanded. Counsel for the prosecution read two statements made by Lieutenant Duffield. The first was: “I am perfectly sane, and know what I have done." In the second statement he alleged that the officers of the regiment had neglected their duty, and added: “It is better that one man should die than that the whole regiment should be ruined. “I made a mess of things. I missed him with the first shot, but hit with the second which was meant for myself.” Lieutenant Doyle stated in his evidence that while he was guarding Duffield he asked him why he did such au awful thing. Duffield replied: “Since the regiment left Jersey the training has gone to pieces. The men are being messed about." Duffield also said that he considered the crime for two days, and then decided to do it, as it was already written in the book of the words that ho was to die. —A. and N.Z.
