LATE RACING

AVONDALE MEETING NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE E. Keesing has been engaged to ride Transformer, Alonsoa, Bright Dawn. Quincoma, and Automne. J. Sharkey will pilot Simplicitas and Blue Sky. A Fine Bracket Both Reremoana and Lady Cavendish are sure to start in the All Aged Stakes to-morrow, and they will be ridden by J. Barry and R. J. Alackie respectively. Making a Debut

The promising maiden Alarita, who has been jumping attractively, will make a debut over hurdles to-morrow, and though he is pitted against good material he should run a fair race. The half-brother to Sea De’il is in great condition and will not go out friendless.

Smart Sprinter Newbury did not get too good a passage in the early stages of the second division of the Nelson Handicap, but was noticed galloping freely four furlongs from home to finish close up. Though he does not carry much condition J. Williamson’s charge has a bit of pace, and may be better suited in the Chevalier Handicap, six furlongs to-morrow. Promising Sort

Among those engaged in the Chevalier Hack Handicap is Storm Fiend, a half-brother by Swift Flight to Wyoming. At the Franklin meeting this horse showed a great burst of speed after getting left at the barrier though he fell when close up at the winningpost. Storm Fiend has been havin lessons at the barrier and getting away well. Yesterday morning he ran a smart five furlongs from the old post in a way suggesting that he is very well.

Injured Horsemen Though R. J. Alackie sustained slight concussion when Festina Lente fell with him in the first division of the Nelson Handicap at the Auckland Easter meeting, he was soon about again and will be in evidence to-mor-row. R. Reilly was not quite so fortLinate, for the injuries he received to his face will most likely keep him out of the saddle for the Avondale gathering, though it is his intention to ride if his doctor gives him a clearance. Out To Win

Elmestra, who claims an engagement in the Alaiden Plate to-morrow, went very well on No. 3 grass this morning, and was under a pull to .cover foLir fLirlongs in 52 2-5. Elmestra has started on eight occasions this season, his only performances being two thirds. Though the class he is to meet cannot be called select there are one or two likely to fully extend him. Unlucky Rider When Gold Rain fell in the Brighton Hurdles it was understood that his rider E. Stanway received nothing more than a shaking. Latest reports to hand, however, are to the effect that complications have arisen and that it is possible that he will have to undergo an operation. Stanway has been most unlucky of late, and a turn of Fortune’s wheel in his direction would not be amiss. Sure To Be Good The big chestnut Town Guard galloped well in plates yesterday morning, and though he ran a good race into second place in the first division of the Neson Handicap last Alonday he was not himself. Prior to the Easter fixture Town Guard had not received a great deal of fast work, and an injured knee a week previously was not to his benefit. The race Town Guard had has done him good, and he should run accordingly to-morrow. The chestnut is still susceptible to imprpvement, however, and when thoroughly tuned up he will win in good company.
