BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
WAR MEMORIAL CEREMONY The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. Cr. Hatfield, on behalf of the council, congratulated the mayor on his election as mayor for another term unopposed. The mayor responded, and said that he was very pleased that every member of the council, except one, had been nominated for another term. He very much regretted that Cr. Hayward was not standing again, and he wished to express his appreciation of his work during the last six years. Arrangements for the unveiling of the war memorial on Anzac Day are complete. The Senior Cadets, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides will assemble at the Birkenhead Post Office and march up to the Civic Reserve headed by the Birkenhead Band. The speakers will be Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, Mr. E. G. Skeates, the mayor, and the Rev. J. J. Bedford. The unveiling ceremony will be performed by Mrs. Neal, representing relatives. Miss Skeates will place the wreath of remembrance at the foot of the memorial. A letter was received from the Health Department stating that the department could not see its way clear to authorise the council to take a portion of the Domain for cemetery purposes, as the existing cemetery was ten acres, of which only two acres had been laid out and only one and a-half acres used for graves.
