NEWMARKET AFFAIRS
THE YEAR’S WORK A review of the year’s work in the borough was dealt with in a comprehensive. manner last night by Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket, in his annual report presented to the meeting of the council. In accordance with the plan laid down at the beginning of the year, operations in connection with the streets had proceeded according to the programme laid down. The expenditure in this respect amounted to . £3,931. compared with .£2,782 last year. This increase was due to increased charges for lighting, the introduction of a system of traffic control and the expenditure of £415 on wages in connection with the Outhvvaite Park. About £1,300 had been expended on street maintenance. It was proposed to lay an experimental section of concrete paving slabs in Broadway at an early date. There was undoubted development in the borough, and the capital expenditure on street construction should not be heavy during the coming years. The cost of reconstructing Carlton Road, Crowhurst Street and Morrow Street in concrete should not exceed £IO,OOO. Owing to the importance of the provision of a rest room for women in which no action had been taken by the council, it was possible that the matter would be further considered at a later stage. In his financial statement, Mr. H. \\ ilson, town clerk, said it had never been more sound than it was at the present time. There was no reason why further improvements should not be effected. The assets exceeded liabilities by £1,523, compared with £975 for the preceding year, and £4lO two years ago.
