The crossing on he track taken by the two takes four i vs under good conditions. Parties usually equip themselves for six days. The distance from Levin to Masteron or Carterton is about 60 miles. The track is over very difficult country and is not well-defined. Trampers sight easily wander into one of the numerous by-paths and become lost, in wet weather it is possible for them io be cut off by flooded rivers. The two took food for four days.
