QUEER PLEA TO BENCH

“I’M ONLY EIGHT STONE” GAOL FOR FALSE PRETENCES “I am only eight stone, and I cannot compete with bigger men,” pleaded William Ingram, aged 37, in a letter which was handed up to Mr- Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Ingram pleaded guilty last week to five charges of obtaining various sums of money and goods by false pretences, including three involving valueless cheques, and was remanded until today for sentences. “When I came out of gaol I couldn’t get work,” the letter went on, “and my children were without food.” “He committed these offences while he was on bail awaiting trial in the Supreme Court on another charge of false pretences,” said Chief-Detective Cummings. “Six months’ imprisonment,” said the magistrate, “and let the Supreme Court do what it likes about the other charge.”
