TROTTING

By ‘ 'A. BAY DO S” SECOND DAY FORM AT HAWERA By ABAYDOS The Outsider Lands Backers were wide of the mark in their selections for the Trial Handicap, in which the Nelson Bingen gelding Neerson, in Bryce’s care, was made a warm favourite. The Southerner went a good race, but when it came to the business end, the outsider Vallamont put it over Neerson, and returned his few supporters a handsome price. Vallamont ran second to Abruabanva at Wanganui on the opening day, but on the concluding day the Van Coronado gelding did not act impressively. Bright Light Shines Again Bright Light, who won the twelve - furlong trotters’ event racely on the opening day, was installed favourite for the Ohawe Handicap on Monday, being bracketed with Heal Todd. The six-year-old son of Petereta—Rose Child proved equal to the task set him, and won by two lengths in 3.48, registering exactly what hanclica.pper Paul set him to do. Bright Light is now going on the right way and should continue to shine while the company is not too select. Hard Luck The Capitalist gelding, Caterpillar, in Leo Berkett’s stable, has had a consecutive run of seconds at Wanganui and Hawera, and had the hard luck to strike two improving trotters at each fixture. At Wanganui Midland finished in front of the Richmondtrained gelding each while at Hawera Bright Light conquered Caterpillar in each start. Four seconds in four starts is a sign of consistency, but it is certainly hard luck for the gelding’s connections. The chestnut trotter’s turn must come soon now. Pluto Prevails There was a fair amount of disappointment in the Pluto camp when the Denver Huon gelding failed to materialise on the opening day. He made amends on Monday, however, when he led home a big field in the two-mile Waimate Plains Handicap, in which he beat some solidly-supported candidates in Hoon Hay, Ricardo, Logan Park and The Shrew, and incidentally gave his connections a good return on their outlay. Pluto last month ran third in the Invercargill Cup, and on the second day landed the Trotting Club Handicap. Karma Again Collects Although not actual favourite in the Kapuni Handicap, Karma, a winner on Saturday, was literally supported in a good field, only Denver’s Doll being entrusted with more money on the machine. The daughter of Nelson Bingen—Mahinga fully justified the public confidence reposed in her, and won cleverly after a god set-to with the favourite and George the Fourth, who got the small end of the purse. The three placed horses started off the one mark, 36 yards behind. Native Star in the Ascendant Native Star, a solid favourite, won the two-mile trot like a genuine lady, and showed further time improvement. In her last three starts the daughter of Native King—Musical Star, has been a winner and has reduced her handicap from 4min. in twelve fur-
