AUCKLAND’S PRODUCE

BUSY DAY AT WHARVES UNSIGHTLY BUTTER BOXES Two factors were plainly evident to visitors to the Auckland waterfront this morning. Firstly, the wide range of primary products shipped from this port, and secondly, the unsuitablity of certain brands of foreign timbers for packing butter. Queen’s Wharf was lined with trucks. On the west side the Huruniil was loading a large consignment of frozen meat. On the east wool, butter, cheese and tallow were being transferred from trucks into the holds of the Port Darwin. While most of the butter was packed in attractive looking boxes, it was clearly evident that portion of the shipment would not present the best possible appearance by the time it reached the Home market. Dented and broken sides- and sprung boards showing on some of the lighter foreign timbers provided a striking contrast to the well-finished, clean appearance of the solid New Zealand white pine boxes.

This afternoon the Horatius is due from Gisborne and southern ports to lift a cargo of kauri gum for the Home market.
