TWO MEN IN A SHED
VAGRANTS AT CAMPBELL PT. A MONTH EACH “There ought to be some sort of shelter down orf the waterfront for these men at night,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day after providing a month’s shelter for both Arthur Ashcroft, aged 57, and George Mitchell, 43. The two men, it was said, had been found sleeping in a Public Works Department shed down at Campbell Point. They had been there three nights and the department had complained to the police about it. Ashcroft had two previous convictions, Senior-Sergeant Edwards said, and had “done” seven days for being idle and disorderly. Mitchell’s list included seven appearances in court, and among other things he had been deemed a rogue and a vagabond. “They are two strong able-bodied men,” continued Mr. Edwards. “The chances are if they go out into the. country they’ll get all the work they want.” They’ll probably get as much as they want during their month’s sojourn at Mount Eden.
