SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY
RESEARCH WORK INVESTIGATIONS STARTED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. As a commencement of a general investigation of secondary industrial conditions in the Dominion, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in conjunction with Mr. Collins, Secretary of Industries and Commerce, has observed various concerns starting in Auckland Province. On completion of this, so the chairman of the council (Mr. G- Shirtcliffe) stated to-day, it will be possible to lay down a definite policy as to the methods by which industrial concerns can be encouraged to utilise scientific assistance. Arising from consultation with the Director of Geological Survey (Mr. P. G. Morgan) and the Mines Department, arrangements are in train for surveys of certain questions fundamental to industry, such as the mineral clay, fuel, building stones and gravel resources of the Dominion. It is hoped during the year to bring out bulletins dealing with each.
For detailed investigation into building stones Dr- P. Marshall’s services will be utilised. Regarding researches connected with primary industries, such as dairying, as a result of conferences between departments interested finality appears to be in sight, as to the measure of control that should be exercised by the council. WAR ON NOXIOUS WEEDS Members of the Council, after conclusion of the meeting today, will cross to Nelson and inspect Cawthron Institute and afterwards hold a short meeting at Nelson. One of the chief features of the visit will be the investigation of noxious weeds pests, arrangements having been made for a collection of likely insects which are known to be destructive to noxious weeds, particular! the Idackberry.
