NEW ROOFS

QUEEN’S WHARF JOB IRON SHEETS CORRODED “New roofs for old,” could be the cry just now on the Queen’s Wharf, where the work of renewing the roofs of sheds 17 and 18 was begun this morning. On the Auckland waterfront it has been found that corrugated iron roofs are not long-lived, and “their maximum life is from ten to twelve years,” said Mr. D. Holderness, harbour engineer. The renewal of the roofs of such large sheds is an undertaking of considerable magnitude. Some years ago the iron tops of sheds 14. 15 and 16 were renewed in asbestos cement sheeting, and the same material is now to be used for 17 and 18, and for 6 and 7, on the Northern Wharf, which are also to have new roofs.
