PAPATOETOE FIRE

BUILDING DESTROYED CAUSE UNKNOWN A fire broke out early this morning in a block of buildings in Shirley Road. Papatoetoe, completely destroying a hairdresser's shop and a billiard saloon. The building, which was owned by Messrs. Burside Brothers, was alarge wooden one and burned very rapidly, and was soon reduced to ashes. There was no fire brigade to cope with the fire, and a bucket brigade could not subdue the flames. A brick wall two feet thick separated the burning building from the stables adjoining, in which was stored. «£ 2,000 worth of contracting material. The hairdressing shop was rented by Mr. H. F. Neilson, and Mr. W. Tucker kept the billiard saloon. There was nobody in the building at the time of the fire, and its cause is unknown. The insurance on the building is not known. This is the eighth fire of unknown source in as many weeks.
