CRICKET
INTER-VARSITY MATCH SATURDAY’S PLAY REVIEWED The tournament cricket match between Victoria College. Wellington, and Auckland University, which was begun on Good Friday, was continued on Saturday. Victoria batting first had made 212 runs in its first innings and Auckland had just started its first venture when stumps were drawn on Good Friday. Resuming on Saturday morning Auckland fared badly, losing three wickets cheaply. Then Garrard joined Wilson and the “rot” was stayed and the half-century reached. Shortly afterwards Hollings, who was proving troublesome with his good-length bowling scattered Wilson's stumps. Bannister joined Garrard a nd the batsmen carried the score along brightly. The former appeared “set” when by a foolish misunderstanding between the pair, both batsmen found themselves at the same end of the pitch simultaneously, and Garrard lost his wicket by the blunder. A GOOD PARTNERSHIP Matters were not rosy for Auckland until Bannister became associated in a fruitful partnership, which produced 120 runs, thereby altering the complexion of the game. A mishit cost Saunders his wicket after he had scored a bright 6S runs. The four succeeding batsmen were a weak “tail.” They contributed only IS runs between them. Bannister played a fine innings almost without fault for 73 not out. Tripe bowled well for Victoria with his five wickets for 67, and Hollings proved more difficult than his two for 64 indicates. Victoria’s change bowler was “off colour,” and received a severe “trouncing” by Saunders and Bannister. Auckland’s innings closed at 3.30 p.m. for 250 runs. Faced with a deficit of 38 runs on their first effort, the visitors began their second innings with Rollings and Osborne batting without confidence, both men obviously being unwilling to take risks. At the drawing of stumps Victoria had lost no wickets for 59 runs. Scores: — VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE First Innings 21 2 Second Innings A. M. Hollings, not out .......... 34 H. W.
