SMALL HOUSES
A MANCHESTER BENEFACTOR BOON TO POORER CLASSES On an estate in Manchester, beyond Belle-Vue Gardens, adjoining- Mount Road, houses are being erected under the terms of the Sutton Trust. W iiliam Richard Sutton left his estate in the hands of trustees who were directed to buy sites in populous places in England and build thereon. small modern houses to let at low rents, to the poorer classes. The tenants of these houses are selected with great care by the trustees, who make inquiries about \he applicants to insure that the houses are let to deserving cases. Preference is given to those who have a number of small children and a limited income. The trust has now built altogether 3000 houses in various parts of the country, London, Bristol, Sheffield, Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham and Newcastle. On the Manchester estate 49 have been completed, and are occupied, and another 130 houses are in course of erection. Three tj-pes of houses are being built: a house with a parlour, kitchen, scullery, larder, coal place, small staircase hall, three bedrooms, and a bathroom: a rather smaller house with a kitchen used as a living room, instead of a parlour, and the third type, which is the smallest, has two bedrooms and no parlour. The houses are built in blocks of six and four and some are semi-detached. Though simple in fiesign they present a pleasing appearance, this being partly due. no doubt, to the use of “rustic” bricks, and the disposition of the windows which are of varying sizes and more numerous than is usual in this class of property.
