MAKING HISTORY
FIRST ’VARSITY BOAT RACE ROWING CLASSIC OF FUTURE In later years Easter Saturday, 1*927. may have lasting significance in New Zealand rowing history, for to-day will be staged on the Waitemata the first of what may be a classic series of inter-varsity boat races. Hitherto New Zealand lias had nothing even remotely parallel to the great university rowing contests of England or America. Although the colleges ot the Dominion have built up strong traditions in other sports, they have not before this taken up rowing officially. Even to-day’s boat race, in which only Wellington and Auckland are competing, does not figure on the 'list of engagements counting towards the tournament shield, but there is little doubt that in future the race will become a permanent institution. The course is from Orakei to the King’s Wharf, and the crews engaged are: Auckland.—W. J. Lowe (str.), C. T. Keegan, L. Brooke, C. H. Hunt. | Victoria College.—F. Gray (str.), J. Platts-Mills, F. Crease, P. Mullins. Dr. I Horton will umpire the race, Mr. K. 11. I Buckler will be starter, Professor Burbidge timekeeper and Professor Algie . 11 • i Mr A A t)i<- judges
