PLAYING LEAGUE RUGBY IN SCHOOLS
A THORNY PATH COMPETITION TO BE ARRANGED A representative meeting of those interested in the formation of a primary schools competition in League football took place on Thursday evening in the League rooms. Mr. W. J. Hammill presided. The chairman stated that until last season the path had been rather thorny for the introduction of the League game in schools, but the nucleus of a competition which was set up, met with much success. Mr. Hammill, in unfolding a scheme which he had fully considered, said that a committee would have to be formed of representatives from the various schools participating in the competition. This committee would be solely' responsible for the welfare of the movement, while the A.R.L. would co-operate in furthering its interests. Various gifts—caps, a shield, and £4O —had already been made. Mr. A. Beasley, the assistant headmaster of Mount Roskill School, and president of the assistant headmasters’ association, said that although he had been connected with Rugby and other sports in schools for over 20 years, he wished to take a fair-minded view of the whole affair. Mr. Beasley believed that, so long as it was clean, boys should not.be prevented from playing whichever game they themselves desired. The following schools have intimated their intention of entering teams in the competition:—Papatoetoe, Otahuhu, Onehunga Convent, Richmond (two teams) and Vermont Street (two teams). It was decided that nominations for the competition be closed on April 28.
