CIVIC SQUARE

REPORT PENDING TASK FOR NEW COUNCIL Civic Square and the question of its utilisation will be one of the first questions for the new council to deal with. - The present council deferred the matter on Thursday evening, and the Works and Parks Committee will report on it. Further reports on the. matter were placed before the council on Thursday, the suggestion of the engineer being that the present roadway at the back of the square should be made 90ft for use as an omnibus centre, leaving a depth of 22-Oft from Queen Street. The road should be continued through to Cook Street. A further suggestion was that the square should be traversed by a road from Queen Street, going right through to Albert Street. Both schemes have room for traffic and women’s rooms. The Town Clerk submitted suggested forms of lease providing for a 50-year term without right of renewal or compensation.
